Contribution is not defined by agreement. It is revealed by verification.
Any definition that remains unverifiable is not measuring contribution. It is measuring behavioral residue.
Contribution is not activity. Not output. Not participation.
In the AI era those signals are cheap.
Contribution is verified capability increase in another person—that persists independently over time.
Canonical Definition
Contribution = verified causal capability transfer that persists independently across time.
When verification exists, the only rational rule is simple:
Value must route where verification points.
What Counts
A claim counts as contribution only if it satisfies all four conditions:
P1 — Temporal Persistence
Capability remains months later without continued help. The beneficiary can demonstrate it independently when tested in novel contexts, with no access to the contributor.
P2 — Cascade Multiplication
Beneficiaries can enable others independently. Capability multiplies through networks as each recipient becomes capable of teaching what they learned, creating exponential branching rather than linear copying.
P3 — Cryptographic Attestation
Beneficiaries sign the capability increase with private keys they control. Each attestation is a conscious being confirming capability transfer occurred and understanding internalized.
P4 — Absence Delta
Measurable degradation when the contributor is removed. Systems show quantifiable decline in performance, proving genuine dependency on the capability that was transferred.
All four pass → Contribution
Any one fails → Not contribution
What Contribution Is Not
Platforms measure activity: posts, commits, views, followers, impressions, reach, clicks, time, engagement.
These are visibility metrics. They prove you were active. They do not prove you made anyone more capable.
Activity = what you did
Contribution = verified capability increase in others
If a claim cannot be tested independently, attested by the beneficiary, and shown to persist and cascade beyond the moment—it is not contribution here.
Portability Is Definitional
A contribution record that is not user-owned and portable is not a contribution record. It is a platform metric.
If your contribution cannot:
- Be owned by you cryptographically
- Move across all platforms and contexts
- Survive institutional failure or policy change
Then it is not contribution under this specification. It is platform property.
Contribution belongs to the individual. Verified cryptographically. Portable universally.
Why This Word Matters Now
For two decades the internet routed value through proxies: clicks, likes, credentials, commits.
Those proxies were tolerable when we lacked verification infrastructure.
Now verification is possible. Temporal persistence testing exists. Cascade proof exists. Cryptographic attestation exists. Absence delta measurement exists.
When verification exists, continuing to route value through unverified proxies is not economic necessity. It is choosing to ignore measurement.
The economy must shift from what was visible to what was proven.
Contribution is the foundation: the unit of human value that survives when output becomes infinite.

When AI made thinking behavior replicable without thinking being, Descartes’ proof collapsed after 387 years. Observation of thought no longer proves conscious substrate exists.
Consciousness now proves itself through verified effects on other consciousness—effects that persist across time, multiply through networks, create measurable absence, and resist synthesis.
Contribution is the primitive for consciousness verification when behavior proves nothing.

”Contribution = activity” becomes standard. Infrastructure measures visibility. Value flows to attention capture.
If protocol definition wins:
”Contribution = verified capability transfer” becomes standard. Platforms adapt to protocol semantics. Value routes to temporal persistence and cascade multiplication.
